Enthalpy change revision for OCR GCE

An Introduction to enthalpy.

what on earth is enthalpy?

Enthalpy is the word used in AS chemistry to describe heat energy of a reaction

why does it change?

During a chemical reaction, covalent bonds in the reactants must be broken, and must be formed in the products.

Breaking bonds is an Endothermic process (meaning it takes enthalpy to do it), and Making bonds is an Exothermic process (meaning that forming bonds releases enthalpy).

Bonds between different combinations of atoms have different energy values, therefore require different enthalpies to break and form.

Enthalpy changes when the total enthalpy to form the products is not equal to the total enthalpy to break the bonds of the reactants.
